Welcome! September 3-6

Welcome to our classroom blog!  I am so excited to meet the students tomorrow.  I know that we are going to have a wonderful year together and I can't wait to get to know your children.  The start of Grade One can be overwhelming and exhausting for our little people, but I will do everything I can to make the transition to full school days easy and stress free.

We are really excited to be piloting a staggered entry first day for Grade One students.  We hope that having only half of the students at a time for the first day will help to ease anxieties and give us a chance to spend more time with each student making sure they are feeling comfortable with the new routine of Grade One.  The letter you would have received in the summer states whether your child will be coming in the morning or afternoon for that first day.

In the first few weeks we will be focussing on school routines such as recess expectations, coming into the classroom independently, nutrition break routines, and classroom transitions. We will take lots of time to get to know each other and bond as a class.

We will be using a communication APP called Class Dojo to communicate reminders or important information about events happening at school.  I will send home instructions for signing up on the first day.

The students will also be using agendas this year to help with communication and organization.  They will bring their agenda home for the first time on September 9.

Here is an overview of our first units of study in Grade One:

Language Arts- We will be learning and reviewing basic pre-reading skills such as letter formation, identification and sound relations. We will begin our first Writer's Workshop unit on writing "small moments" stories.  We will also start learning our reading strategies to build independence and confidence as readers.

Math- We will explore patterns and numbers to 20.

Science- We will learn about seasonal changes from summer to fall as well as our Creating Colour unit.

Social Studies- We will discuss and practice rights and responsibilities at school and home and also look at what it means to belong to different groups in our world.

Every week, I will update this blog with events that are happening in our classroom and in the school. Please be sure to check for updates weekly.
