October 28-November 1

Thank you to our fantastic parent volunteers who joined us for our field trip to the Helen Schuler Nature Center.  It was a cool day, but the students were very excited and had so much fun learning about our seasonal changes and how animals prepare for winter.  Please check the pictures tab for photos of the field trip.

October 14-18

It was a very busy week in Grade One!  We started our Home Reading Program, we had a Fire Safety presentation and an assembly, we Heaped the Jeeps, and we celebrated Thanksgiving and made Apple Turkey's!

Thank you to Aaron Brooks for coming to teach our students about fire safety!  They were so excited to learn from a real firefighter and to try on some of the special gear!

Thank you to everyone for your generous donations for Heap the Jeep!  We know that many Lethbridge Families will be able to have delicious Thanksgiving meals because of your kind donations.

FIELD TRIP TO HELEN SCHULER
On Friday, your child brought home a letter about our field trip to the Helen Schuler Nature Center coming up on October 24.  We would love to have at least 3 parent volunteers to help out on this field trip.  If you are interested, please fill out the form and and return it to school by Monday, October 21.  Thanks!

LOST ITEMS
We've had to pull out the snow gear much sooner then we'd hoped this year.  As a mom, I know how frustrating it is when your child loses something.  We are trying to teach our students to be responsible for their belongings and to keep them in their baskets above their coats hooks, but we know that items go missing from time to time.  Our lost and found is already overflowing, so if your child is missing any items, please check the lost and found (it's located right in our boot room area beside the courtyard doors).  Also try to make sure that your child's boots, gloves, jackets, etc. are all labelled with their name.  We've discovered 5 pairs of Grade One boots that are exactly the same and on the same boot rack!  Thanks for your help with this!

October 7-11

Thank you to everyone for sending apples for your child on apple day!  We had so much fun measuring, adding, writing, counting, graphing and making apple crafts.  A very special thank you to the families who donated baking supplies for our apple crumble, and also the wonderful parents/grandparents who helped out with our apple centers.  We couldn't have pulled off such a fun day without your help!

Information Items
HOME READING
This week, we will be starting our home reading program.  Your child will be bringing home a bag with 2 books and a reading log duotang.  Please try to find time to read to read with your child 10-15 minutes every night.  They will be bringing simple books home to start at their beginning reading level.  Feel free to read the book multiple times with your child to help them develop confidence as a reader. I would also love for them to write down any other books that they may read from home.  ALL READING IS VALUABLE!  I will check and stamp their reading log every day.  Once they complete a full page, they will get to choose a prize from my prize bucket.  I do not want this to be considered "home work", but just a part of an important daily routine.  It truly is amazing how much home reading impacts their enjoyment, skills and development as a reader.

HEAP THE JEEP
This week, our school division is celebrating 25 years of our annual Heap the Jeep (some schools call it Feed the Bug) fundraiser!  All week long, we will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to our Lethbridge Food Banks to help feed families for Thanksgiving and the months to come.  We will be counting our food items as we collect them and tracking the amount on a big chart in the front foyer.  On Friday, we will have a huge school wide assembly line where we will pass the food into the Jeeps!
